We have always found that the easiest route by car has been from Caen or St Malo which can be accessed by ferry from Portsmouth, although this can be more expensive that taking the shorter ferry from Dover to Calais or Bologne. The drive from Caen is pleasant and takes about 6 hours whereas the drive from Calais or Bologne can take up to 9 hours.
